Maja Zeman graduated with a double major in Art History and Russian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. In 2014, she earned her PhD with a dissertation entitled Transformations of Roman Villae in Southern Dalmatia during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages within the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Medieval Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

She is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where she teaches courses on Ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture, as well as early Christian and early medieval art and architecture. Her main research interests include Roman and Late Roman residential architecture, Roman villa culture, the emergence of early Christian churches, and the development and transformation of rural and urban landscapes during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages on the eastern Adriatic coast and in the southern Adriatic region.

She is the coordinator of the faculty collaborative project on Dubrovnik Cathedral (2018 -), the editor of the conference proceedings Discovering the Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals (Zagreb–Dubrovnik, 2025), and the leader of short-term institutional projects focused on the investigation of the architecture and sculpture of Dubrovnik Cathedral Site (from 2020 till 2025). She has participated in several national and international research projects, including the EU FP6 IRCLAMA project at the University of Zagreb (2008-2010), the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports project Croatian Artistic Heritage up to the Year 1000 (2008–2014), and the Croatian Science Foundation project CROMART – Croatian Medieval Heritage in the European Context: Mobility of Artists and Transfer of Forms, Functions and Ideas (2014–2018).
