Drago Župarić-Iljić is a sociologist, working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. He graduated with a double major in Sociology and in History Science at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He got his MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University, Budapest, Hungary (2007). Defended in 2015 at the doctoral programme in Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, his PhD thesis dealt with topic of environmental changes as old/new generators of (in)voluntary migrations, including patterns of environmental vulnerability and resilience. His research within the interdisciplinary fields and intersections of migration, asylum, ethnicity, population and environmental studies focuses on various structural causes and drivers of migration, mobility and post-migration phenomena, with a special concern on the Central and South-East European region. The most recent research project he has participated in is “The European Regime of Irregular Migration on the EU Periphery: From Ethnography to Glossary”, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. Some of his published texts were on issues of humanitarianism vs securitization practices in the SouthEast Europe, on food self-provisioning as a resilience strategy, and discourses and representations of migration, among others. He participated in the research of Migrant Integration Policy Index, and lately he is conducting a research on mapping the potential of local communities in Croatia for accepting and accommodating migrant workers, as part of the national and regional migration governance model.
