Nevena Škrbić Alempijević is a full professor at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. She graduated in 1999 with a double major in Ethnology and English Language and Literature, and earned her Ph.D. in 2006 with a dissertation on customs and rituals in Croatia. She further developed her scientific expertise during study stays at the University of Bergen.

She delivers courses at all study levels at her home institution. In addition, she participates in the doctoral programme at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb, and in the international doctoral programme Transformations in European Societies (Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich).

Her research interests include critical regional studies focused on Southeast Europe, with particular emphasis on social memory, postindustrial urban studies, and performance studies. She currently leads the Croatian Science Foundation project The Transformation of the Postindustrial City: Space, Community, and Work.

Her publications include, among others, the methodological handbook Thinking Ethnographically: Qualitative Approaches and Methods in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology (with Sanja Potkonjak and Tihana Rubić, 2016) and the scientific monograph The City as an Encounter: Ethnographies of Zagreb Squares (with Valentina Gulin Zrnić, 2019). She has also published over seventy articles and serves on several international journal editorial boards. For her scholarly contributions, she has received multiple awards, including the Croatian State Science Award (2020).

Her professional leadership includes serving as the president of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF, 2017–2021), head of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, vice-dean for Research and International Cooperation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and president of the Executive Board of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in Zagreb.
