Sanja Lončar graduated with a double major in Art History and Ethnology at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia (2007). She got her MA in International Architectural Regeneration and Development from the Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK (2016). In 2014 he graduated with Ph.D. thesis entitled “Ethnology and architecture in Croatia from 1870s to 1970s – Research, collaboration and interrelationships” at Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

She has worked as the associate professor at Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where she has taught classes on preservation of cultural heritage, anthropology of space and place, rural architecture and housing. Her main fields of interest are interdisciplinary research of the built and natural environment, protection and preservation of cultural heritage, and regeneration and sustainability in urban and rural contexts. In 2022, she published the book Memorials to the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995) in Sisak-Moslavina County (co-authored with Ivica Pandža Orkan), and in 2021, the editorial book The Caring State and Architecture; Sites of Education and Culture in Socialist Countries (co-editored with Jasna Galjer), about forty scientific and professional papers, and several professional studies, strategic documents, and exhibitions (independently and in co-authorship). She is a member of several professional associations; HED (Croatian Ethnological Society), SIEF (Société internationale d’ethnologie et de folklore), ECOVAST (European Council for Villages and Small Towns) and the Association “Terra banalis”. From 2023 she has served as the president of the Croatian section of ECOVAST (European Council for Villages and Small Towns). She has collaborated with institutions, local governments and high schools on heritage protection and preservation projects. For her successful work on scientific and professional projects, she was awarded prizes from the University of Zagreb (2006), the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2007), Sisak-Moslavina County (2022), the Croatian Ethnological Society (2023, 2024), the Croatian Museum Society (2024), and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Slovenia (2025).
