Zdravko Petak graduated in 1985 with a degree in Political Science from the Faculty of Political Science. He earned his MSc in Political Science in the field of Political Economy of Federalism from the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb (1989). He took his PhD in Political Science at the University of Zagreb in 1999 for a dissertation entitled Public Goods in Theory of Public Choice. In the academic year 2002-2003, he was a post-doctoral scholar at the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, University of Indiana, Bloomington and finished his postdoctoral specialization – The Program for Advanced Study in Comparative Institutional Analysis and Design (supervisor: Professor Elinor Ostrom, winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics).

He is working as the Professor of Public Policy and Political Economy at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Political Science. His main research interests are related to the political economy of institutions, public policy analysis, economic history, and European public policy. He was the president of Croatian Political Science Association (1999-2002) and the editor-in-chief of the journal Annals of Croatian Political Science Review (2004-2013), as well as the political science quarterly Političke analize (2014-2019).

He published two books in Croatian – “Javna dobra i političko odlučivanje” (Public Goods and Political Decision-Making (Zagreb, Faculty of Political Science, 2001) and “Lokalna politika u Hrvatskoj” (Local Politics in Croatia) jointly with M. Kasapović and D. Lalić (Zagreb: Faculty of Political Science, 2004). He also published three edited books – “Političke stranke i javne politike” (Political Parties and Public Policies) (Zagreb, Faculty of Political Science, 2009), “EU Public Policies Seen from a National Perspective: Slovenia and Croatia in the European Union”, jointly with D. Lajh (Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences, 2015) and “Policy-Making at the European Periphery: The Case of Croatia”, jointly with K. Kotarski (Cham: Palgrave Macmillan). He is the member International Political Science Association and the Vice-chair of the RC 32 on Public Policy and Administration.
