Anita Peti-Stantić is a Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, where she teaches courses in comparative linguistics and Slovene studies. Her research focuses on contrastive Croatian–Slovene grammar and on historic sociolinguistics. She is the author of a Slovene–Croatian and Croatian–Slovene dictionary (2013) and three linguistic monographs: Our Language and/or Theirs: Exercises in the Comparative History of South Slavic Standardization Processes (2008); The Croatian Language Question Today: Identities and Ideologies (Srednja Europa, 2013); and Language Planning and National Identity in Croatia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), co-authored with Keith Langston. In recent years, she has been intensively engaged in research on and the promotion of reading and has published several books on the subject:From Reading to Understanding: From Reading Literacy to Reading Competence (2019); with Vedrana Stantić, Curiosity: Why Do Young People Need to Read Popular Science Texts—and Why Now? (2021) and A Journey into the Unknown: Why I Engage in Science and How It Came About? (2021); and with Mirela Barbaroša-Šikić, Full Circle: Why and How to Read with Young People? (2025). From 2017 to 2021, she was PI of the Croatian Science Foundation project The Building Blocks of Croatian Mental Grammar: Constraints of the Information Structure, within which she and her colleagues developed and made publicly available the Croatian Psycholinguistic Database. Since 2022, she has been involved in the implementation and promotion of the national project Born to Read, and since autumn 2025 she is PI of the project Social Construction of Abstract Meanings through Reading (within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan). In addition to her scholarly work, she translates from Slovene and English. Over the past several years, more than 70 of her book translations have been published, and she is the recipient of Slovenia’s highest award for translators, the Lavrin Diploma.
