Course objectives: Introduce students to data sources and research materials and basic procedures for their management. Apply the principles of organization, systematization, and data storage. Apply the principles of personal data protection responsibly. Understand intellectual property, and the basics of licensing of data and heritage resources. The goal of the exercises is to demonstrate how to retrieve data from different sources. The goals of the seminar part of the course are to compile a list of heritage objects or field materials, and to develop a data management plan.

Expected learning outcomes at the level of the course:

(1) Identify and evaluate public authorities’ data sources, sources of research data and data from heritage institutions

(2) Apply data search and retrieval strategies

(3) Identify and evaluate data types, their structure and quality

(4) Identify and describe methods of retrieving, connecting, and integrating data from different sources

(5) List and describe security, legal and ethical frameworks related to data management and disclosure

(6) Organize files, create documentation, identify, and apply metadata standards (metadata schemata, controlled vocabularies, thesauri)

(7) Develop a data management plan

Course content (syllabus):

(1) Introduction to data sources and research material

(2) Heritage institutions (archives, libraries, museums, etc., and their material – conditions and restrictions on access and use of material

(3) Information aids in heritage institutions: search strategies (browsing, simple and advanced search, filtering) and related metadata standards (thesauri, classifications, etc.)

(4) Documentation practices related to heritage material (audio-visual documentation and metadata creation)

(5) Data management: organizing and documenting

(6) Data management: formats and versioning

(7) Data management: storage and security

(8) Ethical and legal issues related to the collection and use of data and resources

(9) Personal data: legal framework and handling of personal data

(10) Sources of quantitative data (survey, experiment, administrative data, panels, cohorts, longitudinal studies)

(11) Statistical databases (data from national and international statistical offices and agencies)

(12) Public authority data and the right of access to information

(13) Main sources of qualitative data (naturally occurring data; data from qualitative research)

(14) Methods of accessing data in the global information environment

(15) Final considerations of the course

Format of instruction: lectures, seminars and workshops, exercises                   

Student responsibilities: The course consists of a combination of lectures, seminars, and exercises in which the contents of the lectures are practically mastered. Within the seminar, two seminar assignments are prepared – a list of heritage objects or field materials and a data management plan. Student progress in the course is evaluated through individual work within exercises, seminar assignments and through a final written exam.
